Friends of the Chinqua-Penn Walking Trail
The Friends of Chinqua-Penn Walking Trail (FCPWT) is dedicated to improving, maintaining, and promoting the Chinqua-Penn Walking Trail for the public to use to improve their health, increase their knowledge of local natural and cultural history, expose them to good agricultural practices, and provide them a pleasant recreational opportunity.
The trail is on the property of the Upper Piedmont Research Station, a part of North Carolina State University (NCSU). NCSU has been very kind to open this space to the public. The trail also has its own Board of local volunteers who make decisions on a local level. Volunteers maintain the trail and any money needed for that comes from donations and grants.
The FCPWT Board of Directors holds quarterly meetings, which are open to the public, at 11 am on the fourth Thursday in January, April, July, and October, followed at noon by the general Friends meeting. These meetings are an opportunity for you to meet and talk with the Board of Directors, get updates about upcoming projects and trail improvements, and share your ideas and suggestions about how to make the trail even better!

Interested in Volunteering?
Volunteers have always been the lifeblood of the Chinqua-Penn Walking Trail! Most of the work needed to maintain the trail is fairly active: toting boards and tools, cutting and carrying out bamboo trees, weeding and planting, moving gravel around with rakes or shovels, hammering and digging, to name a few. Some of the work involves skills such as using saws, building structures, and designing maps or project plans. We don't want volunteers to be working alone, so we schedule work days for a time and day that seems to work for most of the team. If you are interested and want to invest your time in a worthwhile community project, contact us at [email protected].
